Chester, Pa. – Kutztown University men’s rugby used a 19-point second half to defeat Dartmouth College 19-12 in the quarterfinal round of the 2016 Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championships at Talen Energy Stadium, Chester, Pa.
The Golden Bears struggled to move the ball in the first half. KU’s John Sage took a yellow card less than two minutes into the game giving Dartmouth the one-man advantage.
Dartmouth’s Jack Braun immediately scored his first of two tries for the half. Curtis Oberg would hit one of two conversions giving Dartmouth a 12-0 lead. They would be the final points Dartmouth would score in the match.
With 30 seconds left in the half, Dartmouth’s Hayden Aldredge drew a yellow card giving KU the advantage.
The second half was all Kutztown as Murphy Lill scored the first try and a John Sage conversion made it 7-12 Dartmouth. Coming off the bench for Sage, Trent Hensley scored a breakaway try from midfield just seconds after entering the match tying the score at 12.
With less than a minute to play, Wesley Hartmann dragged three Dartmouth with him into the try zone for the go-ahead score. A conversion by Hensley made it 19-12 Kutztown.
The Golden Bears will play UCLA in the semifinal round at 11:28 a.m. at Talen Energy Stadium, Chester, Pa.
